- Feb 5, 2010 Concurrent House Resolution H.C.R 218 - Nurse Anesthetist Recognition
Jan 28, 2009 As most of you have probably heard by now, our esteemed colleague, Jack Neary, died Monday morning, January 26 after an eight month battle with metastatic melanoma. Jack was a pioneer in the field of chronic pain management delivered by CRNAs. A resident of Vermont, Jack practiced at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH for the last 23 years. If there was a treatment modality for chronic pain, Jack knew that modality and spent his life teaching others his skill. He was one of the founders of the Nurse Anesthesiology Pain Education Seminars (NAPES), the only course at it's inception, that was specific to CRNA chronic pain education. He was extremely active in combating any legislation that aimed to limit the practice of CRNAs in the field of chronic pain management.

Jack was also a good friend to everyone he met. He always seemed even keeled and it was easy to like Jack. He was an inspiration to CRNAs everywhere and touched the lives of all of us in the CRNA community.
Jack was committed to educating CRNAs in chronic pain management and his passing will not go in vain.
The AANA Foundation has set up the "Jack Neary Scholarship Fund". This fund will continue the work that Jack began those many years ago. The New Jersey Board of Nursing (BON) has adopted amendments to its rules, effective June 16, 2008, that add CRNAs as a type of advanced practice nurse (APN) in New Jersey. The adopted rules require that both (1) CRNAs currently practicing in New Jersey, and (2) CRNAs without master’s degrees who may wish to practice in New Jersey now or in the future, must apply for and obtain APN status by June 16, 2009.
Additional information concerning these rules, including application requirements and information, is posted on the member side of the AANA website at http://www.aana.com/MemberHome.aspx
under Government Affairs > State Issues > News.
The information currently posted on the AANA website will also appear in the September 2008 AANA NewsBulletin.
Because these rules require both (1) CRNAs currently licensed in New Jersey, including those who may live in other states, and (2) CRNAs who do not have master’s degrees who may wish to practice in New Jersey in the future, to apply for APN status by June 16, 2009, we wanted to notify all 50 state nurse anesthetist association presidents and government relations committee chairs concerning this application deadline.
