On January 22, 2010 Jon Bennett and I spent the day at the statehouse to represent Vermont CRNAs for National Nurse Anesthetist Week. We are always well received. This year many legislators stopped by and acknowledged our key role in Vermont health care. We enjoy the opportunity to educate about who we are and what we do. You can imagine the fun I had when one elder legislator looked over our display, and said "I didn't know nurses could give anesthesia!" Be assured he eventually walked away well educated!!
We had special visits from Speaker of the House Shap Smith and Lt. governor Brian Dubie. We had a long interesting chat with senators from Caledonia County, Matt Choate and Jane Kitchel who have been very involved in Vermont's health care plan. Senator Nitka of Windsor County was very impressive to speak with. In the chamber during session, we were introduced by Representative Donna Sweaney of Windsor County.
Our resolution was sponsored by Representative Kathleen Keenan of Franklin County and read aloud. "Now, therefore be it resolved by the Vermont Legislature that it recognizes the week January 24, 2010 as Nurse Anesthetists Week in Vermont and celebrates the importance of Vermont’s Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and their role in providing quality health care for the public."
